R.I.P Sister Joseph Angelina Marie, O.Carm.

Sister Joseph Angelina Marie O.Carm. passed away peacefully at Garvey Manor on October 10, 2025. Shortly before her passing, the Sisters gathered in Sr. Angelina’s room and prayed the Evening Liturgy of the Hours. Sr. Angelina went home to the Lord in the 38^th year of her religious life.

Ofelia M. Castano was born on August 31, 1939, in Damortis, LaUnion, Philippines, and was among seven children born to Gregorio and Angelina (nee Alisangco) Morta. Coming of age in the Philippines, she was educated as a Doctor of Optometry and a Medical Technologist. Leaving a large family Sr. Angelina immigrated to the United States and worked as a Lab Technician at a hospital in Manhattan, eventually becoming an American Citizen on March 7, 1984. She is survived by her sister, Josephina, who resides in the Philippines, and her brother, Arthur, who lives in San Francisco, as well as many nieces and nephews in the Philippines and California.

Sr. Angelina entered the Congregation on January 4, 1987, and professed Perpetual Vows on September 9, 1995. Her first Mission was Carroll Manor, Hyattsville, MD (1989-1990), followed by Ozanam Hall, Bayside, NY (1990-2012), and St. Joseph Nursing Home, Utica, NY (2012-2014). Her final Mission was Garvey Manor, where she was assigned on June 14, 2014. Due to declining health, she was moved to Our Lady of the Alleghenies Personal Care for a few years, and in November 2023, Sr. Angelina began receiving skilled nursing care.

In her Missions, Sr. Angelina served as a Resident Coordinator, in Medical Records, and did Pastoral visits and activities for the residents in the Marian Center for Dementia Care at Garvey Manor. As her health failed, Sr. Angelina continued to be faithful to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, and to community and personal prayers.

May the Lord grant Sr. Joseph Angelina Marie the joy of reuniting with her deceased Carmelite Sisters and many loved ones, and may she experience the fullness of everlasting peace as her reward!
